The White House says it is still considering the possibility of a Cabinet post for Donald Trump’s top national security aide.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters Monday that the decision on a possible vice president position for national security adviser Mike Pompeo remains “on the table.”
The White is weighing whether to choose a Cabinet member who would have the authority to make key decisions that could have a direct impact on the future of the nation’s nuclear arsenal.
Pompeo is considered the frontrunner to be the new national security chief.
In a statement, Sanders said the administration is still working out its options.
“The president has made clear he would like to continue to lead our national security strategy,” Sanders said.
“He’s looking for the best candidate to do that job, and that’s why he has selected Mike Pompey as his national security advisor.”
The appointment of Pompeo, a retired Army general who served as deputy secretary of defense under Trump, is a sign that the administration will be serious about reviving the nations nuclear arsenal amid escalating tensions with North Korea.
Pompeos recent work as a national security expert in the Middle East, including an appearance on “Fox and Friends” on April 27, also suggests the Trump administration is serious about a renewed commitment to the nation s nuclear arsenal and the possibility that it could be revived under a new leader.
Pompey has a background in security analysis and was a member of the House Armed Services Committee and of the Senate Intelligence Committee, both of which are chaired by Democrats.
He has also worked as an adviser on intelligence matters to members of Congress.
A former intelligence analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency, Pompeo served as director of national intelligence under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2006.
Pompeomos military experience has been a major selling point for a candidate like Pompeo to be a national intelligence director.
The former military officer also has experience running a security consultancy and in 2013 he was awarded the prestigious George Polk Award for Excellence in Public Service, given by the National Academy of Sciences.
