MAYPORT, Texas — The Mayport Academy District School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to offer free public education to the children of students who cannot afford it.
The new district school is the first in Texas to do so.
It was created by a $1 million grant from the Texas Education Agency to help address a shortage of school-aged children in the Mayport area.
It’s the first school district in Texas that will offer free education, the district said.
Students attending the new Mayport High School are being matched with parents or guardians for up to two weeks to help them find work, and the money will be used to purchase school supplies and materials for classroom instruction.
The district says it will also offer tutoring services to students and parents to make sure they can learn.
