(CBS) — Mayport High School is closed due to Hurricane Irene in New England, according to Mayport Community Schools Superintendent Eric N. O’Neill.
Mayport Community Elementary will be closed until Friday as the storm continues to impact the area, according the superintendent.
Schools reopen Friday after Irene is over.
Mayor Michael O’Donnell said the school will be open for a few hours after the storm clears, but will be completely closed again in the evening.
Mayors Office of Emergency Management and Public Safety tweeted Friday morning that a flood threat had been declared for portions of the city.
O’Neill said the district was working with local officials to determine the exact storm severity and where schools will be.
Mayoral spokesman David Harn said the city is still reviewing the information.
A spokeswoman for Mayport City Schools confirmed to CBS News that the school was closed Friday afternoon.
Mayport Public Schools has closed for the weekend, she said.
