Mayport’s ELEMENTary Coastal Science Academy will remain closed May 25 due to the hurricane Florence.
According to the school’s website, “Mayport’s elementary Coastal Sciences and Geotechnical Academy was founded in 1882 and serves children and adults from the Mayport area who enjoy outdoor and coastal activities.”
The school has also had an “open house” every Thursday for parents and visitors to participate in.
The school closed on Friday due to flooding in the area, and closed for a day on Saturday due to “flood damage” in the surrounding area.
“The school was open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and our staff was available to assist parents and other family members,” Mayport Beach Elementary School principal Dan McClellan said in a statement.
“Due to flooding and erosion from Hurricane Florence, we are no longer offering classes.
The children of the school are not affected by this.
The teachers will remain on call throughout the weekend and the students are safe.”
Mayport Elementary School, which has 1,800 students, is located on the north side of the city.
