Recode’s parent company, NBCUniversal, has just acquired the startup Mayport, which is building a virtual reality technology for teachers.
The acquisition gives Mayport access to the NBCUniversal team, which already operates a virtual education network, and Mayport’s existing network of virtual classrooms, which provides access to students in schools across the U.S.
Mayport’s technology allows teachers to work in real time with students on their own computers, and lets teachers remotely teach the kids to interact in the virtual world.
In May 2018, the company announced that it had reached over $3.3 billion in funding.
Maypts parent company NBCUniversal is also in talks with Microsoft, Amazon and other tech companies about launching a new virtual education platform for teachers that will allow teachers to collaborate on virtual lessons in the classroom.
The Mayport acquisition comes on the heels of the Mayport family buying the startup TeacherVR for $250 million.
TeacherVR, a software platform that lets teachers record and play video lessons for students in the real world, was launched in September 2017, with over 150,000 students already using the software.
