A teacher at a Mayport elementary school died of cancer last week.
Mayport Police Chief Brian Liguori said Tuesday the teacher, 49-year-old Patricia Lee Ponce, was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in December.
She had been with the Mayport Public Schools for 20 years and was in good health, Ligugori said.
Ponce was the fifth teacher at the school and the second teacher to die in the last two years.
Mayport is a small city in south Florida.
Ponce was a part-time school resource officer and served as the principal’s liaison to the district’s Department of Health and Human Services, Loguori added.
She was a family friend of Superintendent David Fuhrman, Ligon said.
Liguorias police department was called Monday night to the school to investigate a possible suicide.
Fuhraman said the teacher was last seen on the afternoon of Tuesday, Dec. 5.
A school resource agent who works with the district reported that the teacher had called in to say that she had been in trouble and that she would be at the office later that day, Fuhrer said.
